One week in BA...

Posted in Argentina forum

Hi All

My girlfriend and I are going to be in Argentina for a couple of weeks and in BA for one week. There are a couple of things I'd like to know:

1. We want to stay in a cool part of the city - where would you stay if you were visiting and what sort of place? Do you know any places that would be good? Should we rent an apartment?

2. We are thinking of coming to work in BA in the future - where would we need to visit to get a sense of what it is like to live in BA. Where are the typical neighbourhoods and where would people go out of an evening.

3. We've also got a further week in Argentina. What would you advise we do? Fly south to Patagonia, north to Iguaco or west to Cordoba and Mendoza or just stay in BA for another week?

Saludos

Adam

Hi! adam, my name is Elena. As all the other memebrs said, Palermo o las Cañitas are the coolest areas. If you want to experience how it is to live and work in Ba I will recomend downtown or Congreso.
The neighbourhood were you decide to stay will also be of big inlfuence regarding the price of the apartment. I recommend you to ALWAYS rent with a broker!!! Just put "temporary rents in Buenos AIres" in google and you will have a lot.
Regarding the "extra week" were you go depends also on how much you can spend and what do you like, here I give you some options:
-Patagonia: Neuquen or rio Negro, at the time is snowing so is perfect for skiing or jut going arround, it`s very beautifull because of the different tones of green and the contrast with the white snow ( If like, I own a time share that Im not using these year, maybe it can help you)
    - Misiones: I don´t recomend to much going north now because of the problems of "A" FLUE and DENGUE ( mosquito desease).
    - Cordoba or San Luis: I olove this two provinces, they have a natural energy that will make you feel as new. If you want send me an e-mail and I can recommend you some places here.
-And last but not least, If you like wine ( perferct for the weather argentina is having now) go to MENDOZA... amixture of fun, natura, great views and the best wines.
I hope this information was usefull for you.
If you want me to give u some information dont doubt it, send me an e-mail to [...]

I am From buenos aires, I have some apartments for a reasonable prices.
in my opinion if you want to stay in a cool area I am agree with the rest of the members, palermo is a great area, also las canitas, where you can find many differen restaurants, cafes, shopps, pubs, and many activities, la rural, bosques de palermo, museums, el planetario, jardin japones, and if you like to dance you can go to club araoz.

on the other hand, don't forget to visit cordoba! '' el valle de calamuchita'' is wonderful and you can be in contact with the nature.

    kind regards,
    Maria.

    Hi Adam

It's not a great idea to rent for a week unless you got an apartament recommended from someone who already stayed here. As Caspar said there are some that profit from this in an unethical way so it's better to go for the safe choice for one week. If later on you want to stay longer you can rent an apartment. If you want to stay on a cool part of the city I recommend Palermo. You have dozens of restaurants and bars around it and it's a very safe place.

As Caspar said there are all type of neighborhoods with different type of people. You can find comercial districts, relaxed residential areas, crowded business areas, more bohemian type of neighborhoods, etc. I think you will like it very much, but be aware, living in Buenos Aires under a typical Buenos Aires salary can be quite a challenge when you are used to a first world country standard of living. If you can get a job as an expat or a job you can do through the internet and get paid en pounds as if you were in the UK you will have an amazing time here.

    About other places to visit:
On the Patagonia you can go to
    a) the Perito Moreno Glaciar area. It's best to go on plane since it's a very long distance
    b) the Bariloche area: you have more places to visit but there are no big glaciars. It's a cold forest climate with dozens of beautiful lakes and mountains. It's very relaxing
    c) Mendoza: wine land!! you have a lot of nightlife and extreme tourism activities such as rock climbing, rafting, horse back riding, and paragliding. You can visit the wineries and enjoy the city and it's nightlife
    d) Iguazu: I haven't been there yet but everyone says it's beautiful!
    e) Salta and the North-West area: I haven't been there yet but I was told it's amazing. it has more of a desertic climate with magnificent landscapes. Specially Pumamarca and the Quebrada de Humahuaca. If you are interested in doing this path let me know that I have family that has done it and they can tell me which are the "must view" places to go.

    Regards,
    Felipe

    Hi mate,

I wouldn't bother renting for that amount of time, the chances of getting screwed over are too high. I'de stay in Palermo in a small hotel or B&B if I were you.

There isn't such a thing as a typical neighbourhood, the city has around 13 million people and huge diversity. If you want to get a sense of the city perhaps spend a day in San Telmo, one wandering Palermo, an afternoon in Recoleta and an evening in La Boca.

From there it is just a matter of opinion, but Iguaza is amazing and you will never forget it. Patagonia is beautiful but to many its disappointing...
