As a foreigner in working and living in Sofia, Bulgaria I would like to know what to think off when buying a used car from, for example. cars.bg. Are there any pitfalls and are there any suggestions which I have to think about when visiting one of the many used car dealers or private owners.

Most cars that are sold ( those that are unregistered ) are imports from Italy and sometimes Austria or Germany. German cars are in excellent shape ( usually ) but beware of sellers that have transported them from Italy to Germany just to get German papers and sell them with higher profit. If its a private owner, my advice is to ask him bring the car to a repair lot, pay them a small fee and they`ll tell you how good it is. The easiest way to discover bad maintenance is by looking at several spots:
- Tires - if they too worn out or of different brands
- Car battery - if its a cheap one then chances are many other parts and repairs have been done by using a frugal approach.
- Use of 15W40 oil indicates engine wear
Very good cars can be found on the many car forums, usually sold by respected members or by going to an official dealership`s buy back lot.Good luck!

Hoi Eric,
Ik heb, als Vlaamse, wonend in Veliko Tarnovo een auto gekocht via een partuculier. Ten eerste neem iemand mee die Bulgaars spreekt en die bovendien wat van auto's kent, als je dat zelf niet doet uiteraard. Eens de auto gekocht moet je die op je naam laten registreren bij een notaris samen met de verkoper, naar de Kat met je registratieformulier en daar moet je op 4 verschillende plaatsen je papieren in orde laten maken. Verzekering afsluiten, taks betalen evt laten keuren en je kan rijden! Niet moeilijk, wel tijdrovend! Het belangrijkste waar je op moet letten is je auto niet te betalen (of toch niet het hele bedrag) voor je bij de notaris geweest bent en hij op jouw naam staat, want ald de eigenaar weigert samen met je naar de notaris te gaan is er meestal wat loos.
