St Luke's Players Community Theatre is presenting They Promised Her the Moon by Laurel Ollstein Directed by Janine Longy. This is the story of the first American woman to test for space flight. Jerrie Cobb, steps into an isolation tank for a record-breaking nine hours. Her memories unfold before her, from learning to fly a plane as a child in Oklahoma to testifying in Congressional hearings about the under-the-radar all-female Mercury 13 space program. This is a compelling drama about the challenges of sisterhood and fighting for the greater good, based on a true story . In the play, the actor must simulate flying a Piper Cub, a B17 Flying Fortress and a small plane in a storm over the Amazon.
It is a first for our theatre, with a simple set, using light, sound and projection to tell the story. We have explored the story of these extraordinary women who dared to challenge a man's world. We have had the privilege of support from the BC Museum of Aviation who lent us costumes and props. Two retired pilots, Stan Brygadyr and Norm Dressler have offered advice and flying lessons. The cast ranges from 6 years old to retirement age, first time on stage and experienced. This is community theatre at its very best!
