So where to live in Spain?

So my question is, where would you recommend to live in Spain, nearby Gibraltar? From what I could find, those towns that are closer to Gibraltar look a bit like havens for retired people, while the more interesting places are perhaps a bit too far, as I wouldn't like to have to commute around an hour or more every day. Any suggestions?
